When you reach 43 minutes, the camera starts blinking minutes left in RED. Within a few seconds after that, it stops recording until you hit record again. In other words, you can't record more than 43 minutes straight. Does anyone know if there is a firmware update for this camera? Learn more.
From the relative uniformity of MiniDV over the last decade, camcorders now come in a bewildering range of formats. With optical image stabilisation as well, the SD5 has potential to punch well above its size. So, although this is a three-CCD camcorder, its sensors are very small, which will have an impact on low-light sensitivity. The SD5 actually offers three recording modes — one using Full HD called HG, and two flavours of 1, x 1, with different levels of compression.
And unfortunately, what looks like a lens ring actually just unscrews the built-in automatic lens cover. The fact that memory cards are loaded from the bottom of the camcorder could also prove annoying if you intend to use the SD5 with a tripod, as you will need to unscrew it to change cards. Very few functions have their own separate buttons. The PRE-REC system buffers three seconds of video at all times when enabled, so when you hit record this is tacked on the front.

Panasonic claims battery life is around 55 minutes in real-life conditions, frequently using the zoom and switching the SD5 on and off. In practice we found that it would manage over an hour on a full charge, even with the LCD on maximum brightness. The major problem with flash memory is capacity.
HD footage packs more information into each frame, which means more data and bigger files. So, during our testing we used a 1GB SD card and that was able to hold about 20 minutes of footage. Whichever package you buy, if you're planning on taking the SD5 on holiday, you'll need to pack lots of SD or SDHC cards — or set aside some time away from the pool for in-camera editing.
It records excellent HD video and has a number of clever features. If only the memory was there to match. If you're going to shell out for lots of memory cards, you might be tempted to simply buy a camcorder with a decent-sized hard drive, such as the similarly priced Sony Handycam HDR-SR7.
Still, SD cards are relatively inexpensive, and if you're happy to fill your pockets with them the SD5 won't disappoint you.
